Now we are getting veeery technical :rotfl:
I think it may be worth his while getting a plumber to look at it...any plumbers out there that could give me a rough idea how much it would cost to look at the system and set it up for him for the most economical outcome? ;)

I see- so he could just run the hot water one for an hour or so?
Also- from googling these appliances- doesn't the Amptec also act as a hot water heater? Why does he need 2 appliances?

    Sorry for all the questions:o
One hour may not be enough (see link below). It's more efficient having a direct water heater than an indirect water heater. Immersion heaters are cheap.

What would a plumber do? You need the instruction manuals and just ask questons on here. Plumbers will give you differing opinions depending on who they are they'll give you the same differing opinions as you will get on this forum. Some plumbers have been telling people to run their central heating 24/7 as it is cheaper to run and better for the boiler. If you actually did that it would cost more over 24 hours but looking at any one hour in isolation it appears cheaper.

The most economical set up is to run it as little as possible. He should be setting it so the water heats for 2 hours (or whatever the reheat time of the cylinder he has is) every day to bring the temperature up. This link http://www.plumbnation.co.uk/site/oso-20-series-indirect-unvented-hot-water-cylinders/20-series-brochure.pdf will tell you the exact reheat times. A 170litre cylinder requires 148 minutes (2 and a half hours).

He needs to look at his bills to see if it worth changing to a standard tariff where all units are around 10p plus a standing charge. It may be cheaper than paying around 5p at night and being penalized by paying 15p during the day.

You will want to compare before the meter is changed so that he gets the right meter. Some suppliers don't like adding the two figures together to bill on a standard tariff so he may want to request a standard meter rather than an E7 meter. The engineer who changes the meter will have both types of meter in the van but will be working to the worksheet that's been given to them so it will be too late to ask on the day.
