Thanks for your post. I don't know anything about Universal Credit despite browsing the internet. I might ask about this when I renew the tax credits in April. Thanks again.

This thread by Zagfles might help you with regards to your tax credits claim.

Universal Credit is part of the Welfare Reform Bill that is still going through parliament, so we are still not sure exactly what the new rules will be. The income based benefits like Tax Credits, Job Seekers (income based), Income support, ESA (income based) and Housing are all going to go and claimants of these will then claim the new Universal Credit instead (if they qualify for them under the new rules). Universal credit claimants will have conditions put on them.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

Sorted ...ahem ...!!! It would appear the £80 i was panicking about is ...ahem ....actually .....child benifit.Though it has brought somthing else to light (here we go again) .I went onto the tax credits web site and used the online calculator which kicked a figure of £67 out for us, we get £46.I realise this is just a guide and it does state this but are they usually that far out .

The calculator shows your TOTAL entitlement from the day you use it (ie today) until 05-04-12 -approx 6 weeks.
  • Does anyone know when the Universal Credits system should be up and running?

Does anyone know when the Universal Credits system should be up and running?

The Bill provides for the introduction of a 'Universal Credit' to replace a range of existing means-tested benefits and tax credits for people of working age, starting from 2013.

2013 is when they plan to start UC it seems, but it will take a while to get everyone over to it.

Edited to say that I think I read that some of the welfare reforms will start this year i.e. ESA contribution based claimants, who have been claiming for more that 1 year; are not able to claim income based ESA and are not placed in the Support group?

    No longer relevant..
  • I just found this article which states

" The details also suggest ministers have still to resolve some key issues including how credit is to be paid and whether to include child tax credit and council tax benefit. It has been decided to exclude carers allowance."

So it's not "universal" really...there is still a lot of work & clarity from the government on this....
  • I was a bit dissapointed when I received the letter today saying I was no longer eligible for tax credits.

They only started paying me them again in November after stopping payments for about 2 years because of "overpayments". When the system started, they calculated the whole thing wrong and were threatening me to pay £3000 - goodness knows how I won the appeal to not pay.

To be honest I now no longer have to worry about them asking for money back, worrying how and where I will find the money :)

Now I know I am not getting it I can plan effectively with no surprise letters (albeit this one will hopefully be the last surprise as I knew nothing about this new threshold)

    The system was a joke!

PS - I have read back at some of the petty comments on here - is there really a need?
  • I love my tax credits, I'm a single working mum who pays childcare, I'm £100 per week better off for working, they enable me to support myself, without them I would just have to live on benefits, and go slowly insane. Tax credits help alot of families help themselves, but I guess there has to be a cut off somewhere.

My boss will be losing her child benefit, and she moans about it because that has paid for her childrens dancing\football etc, mine pays for food etc! can't find much sympathy I'm afraid.

I do have sympathy for her I'm afraid. She has probably worked hard, gained a good education, paid into the benefits' pot for years only to have the £20/£30 a week taken away.

I have little or no sympathy for people who rely on tax credits to pad out their income. They should have worked harder - in a nutshell.

When the CB strip away arrives, the Mr and I will be 'adjusting our salaries' to escape it. We've worked to fund other people over the years - time to keep what little we get.
