In principle, Yes. In reality, No. Had you suffered demonstrable loss such as a ruined carpet, you would have a case. Otherwise you will be laughed out of court on the de minimis principle.

I am quite surprised at the "lie down and take it" attitude on a consumer site.

Many posters are tired of the compensation culture.

Sometimes life has its annoyances. Your complaint should have been made at the time the work was done, or as soon as possible afterwards and the guy probably would have offered to do the work. The guy has apologised and already told you the dust was unexpected. I've pulled my own boiler apart in the past and wouldn't have considered that a plume of dust could emerge from it.

Suggestions that you can charge for your loss of leisure time whilst you cleaned are ridiculous - how on earth will you value that in court?

Put it down to experience and move on. Personally I would never be out of the house when somebody is round in my house working on something - next time you should be there to keep an eye on proceedings as they happen and raise fault at the time. While you rent the cost of maintenance of the house isn't yours, you won't always be immune to the inconvenience that sometimes will come with it.
