How to adjust depth stop on Black & Decker hammer drill

Options
I have a Black & Decker hammer drill, model BD154R 570W. It belonged to my late husband and no longer has its instructions. My friend and I are trying to use it, but we need to adjust the depth stop, and can't see how to do so. There is a large hexagonal-headed bolt that looks as though it ought to lock and unlock the depth stop but it is recessed into the plastic of the handle, so that we can't see how to get at it to turn it.

We've tried googling for instructions, but haven't found anything relevant. Can anyone help us, please?

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

  • Hi,

why not mark the drill bit at required depth?

Use a wine cork...drill through it lengthways, cut it to the approximate length needed to stop the bit going deeper than required and fine tune by adjusting the position of the drill bit in the...ummm...grippy thing that has a name that will return to me after I hit post.

    Edit: chuck!

    As it happens, I have a B&D KR600.

How equivalent this is, I have no idea.

However, by some miracle, I have the manual, which says:

    Fit the drill bit

    Loosen the side handle

Slide the depth stop until the end of the depth stop aligns with the end of the drill bit.

Slide the depth stop until the distance between the end of the depth stop and the end of the drill bit is equal to the length of the screw you will fit. Tighten the side handle.

Looking at the accompanying picture, you should have a rod that slides through a hole on the grip (the side handle??)

Have you tried twisting the handle?

Depth stops are usually part of the handle assembly, twist the handle anti clockwise, this should loosen the handle and the depth stop, when you have set the stop to the required depth twist the handle clockwise to tighten and to stop it slipping.

    A-ha!

I've got it. No thanks to the instructions!

As you've obviously already realised, you need to turn the hex nut before the depth guide will slide into its slot.

It isn't adjusted from the top-it's adjusted from the bottom. Hold the grip on the side handle and unscrew the whole grip until the depth guide will slide into place. Then adjust the depth and re-tighten.

    HTH :)

Edit: beaten to it by the experts ;)
