Windows Media Player Keeps Freezing My Machine?

I have Windows 98 First Edition and the Windows Media Player just freezes the whole machine whenever I try to use it. I cant even close the system down. I have to turn the computer off. I tried to download Media Player from Microsoft but that was only compatible with Windows 98 SE. Any advice please?

Try a different media player! What type of files are you *trying* to play?

Am trying to play music and video clips.

Try using VLC Media Player.

Try reinstalling WMP over itself. To do this, navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player & double-click on setup_wm (or setup_wm.exe) & follow the wizard to reinstall. Reboot when done & check to see if the problem persists.

If it doesn't help, espresso's suggestion is very good. G

foobar2000 - low resource audio player. If you're looking for video playback, KLIte codec pack will do the trick.

Have tried advice in Post No 6 but when I try to reinstall I get the message unable to detect available updates or when I choose install all components the components box is empty and I get the message no newer updates but it still jams everything

Uninstall it from Add or Remove Programs - this will returm you to the previously-installed version of WMP.

Then download a fresh copy of WMP9 from here, & install it. G
