Ikea Lack TV Bench - finding a new use?

This post is a result of reading http://www.ikeahackers.net !!
We have an Ikea Lack TV bench in white (bleh) like this:
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00105323/
We already have a TV unit which is lovely and also the white colour fits NONE of our furniture! It would be a waste to not use it somehow though and could be a fun project. My initial thought was a coffee table, but the white really is horrible (in my eyes).
Any ideas? Me and OH are both a bit clueless with DIY. Using it as some sort of storage could be good, or maybe a bookcase as we don't have one, but its the wrong way round...
As you can tell I'm not very creative!!!!!!!

Thanks!

After a little thinking I'd consider two things.
1.If you'd like it as a coffee table ask on here if there's anything you could paint or cover it with - you could have great fun designing your own coffee table with it.
2.Storage.If it was me I'd possibly use it as a base to build storage on.
Possibly hallway storage placing small baskets into the shelf, building some MDF/melamine coated furniture board up one side, possibly making the top of the unit itself somehow into a shoe rack? and maybe putting a basic wooden frame up the rear sides and across the top to serve as a coat rack too.Or,instead of shoe rack could be additional storage space with larger baskets or you could pad it as a seat? (not sure if I would though)Or just leave the unshelved top side of the original unit for display purposes with a bold modern floral arrangement or ornament on it?
Or for storage/bookcase in living room either build your own shelves onto it or buy some cheap cube shelving to make it a more funky unit?Could possibly make a funky 'drawer' in the shelf area too
I'm going to have a think now and probably come up with loads of strange ideas!!You should see what I'm planning for my sons bed:eek::rotfl:If women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0 -
This http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70201811/ (pick colour) on top of Lack to create a bookcase/display cabinet.
Mix books and cool objects and display them. Magazines are stored in lack. You can put tall candle holders on lack too as it will stick out a bit.
If you want to change the colour get a melamine primer. I'd personally leave it white (mind you, I have no idea what your style is), get a white expedit and paint the wall that that will be against in deep grey.0 -
What furniture do you actually need/will you use? If you can't think of a space in your home for it, it'd be better to sell it for a few quid.A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0

Oooh thanks so much for the ideas everyone! Lots to think about, I like the idea of Expedit on Lack, I'll keep my eyes open for a secondhand one
SheGirl, I love the idea of a shoe and coat rack too, with storage for various dog walking paraphenalia and leaving the house equipment :P My hall is too small but maybe I can make something funky for my Mum's new house when she moves. You'll have to post some pics of your sons bed when you have had your wicked way with it!
The only furniture I actually need are a coffee table and bookcase but its slightly damaged and probably wouldn't sell for more than £5, think its worth losing out on the £5 to have a project to keep my brain busy withGC2012: Nov £130.52/£125

I got Expedit, but low ones, I use it as a sideboard/bookcase and it's behind my sofa.
The top is used to display all sorts of pretty things, everyone who sees it loves it.
It was cheaper to get 3 smaller ones and put them next to each other, than get a bigger one. Weird!
Oh and I bought a few baskets to fit (you might want to try and find cheaper ones) and I keep my dogs' toys and other bits in it. The baskets were the most expensive of the lot! :eek:0 -
After you've painted it to match the rest of your decor you could get a sheet of plate glass for the top and put some favourite photos scattered underneath, or pick some nice flowers and leaves and press them.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.
