Car registered but no delivery

In January we ordered a new Fiat 500 from a main dealership.
The car was supplied with a quoted delivery time of 6 weeks (which would be today), being supplied from a batch already ordered by the dealership.
We agreed to register the car in January, so they can meet their targets in return for a discount.
At the start of last week we were advised that the car would be delivered within 10 days, and would be in one of the 2 deliverys either last Friday or today.
We have now been told today that the car is not in this delivery and they do not know when it will be delivered (maybe the end of this week).
We are concerned that now the car was registered on 31st January, it is starting to lose value already, and the warranty has started to run down. We are not in a desperate rush to have the car, but obviously dont want it to end up being 6 weeks old when we buy it brand new.
Does any one have any suggestions how to tackle the dealer on this, and what are rights are?
Thanks in advance

Erm, cancel or order a different car?
Seriously, some of us still drive cars that are 14 years old, I think you're being a bit silly worrying about a few weeks. When you resell it, no-one is going to count the weeks, they're going to go by the year or nearest half year.
As always though, the best advice would be to ring them and ask. If the dealer don't give you an answer that keeps you happy, ring the head office for the manufacturer.0 -
Meh, new car.... You lose 2k just driving off the forecourt. 6 weeks is nothing....“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I'd be hanging on for a 12 plate if I was buying a new car now.0

Hopefully they haven't given it number plates and tax yet, in which case wait a couple more weeks and get a 12 plate which will increase the value slightly.0

Surely if its registered it will already have the plates? It can't be registered in January 2012 to 12 plates, can it?0

Well if it's been registered it will have to have 61 plates, it would be illegal to give it 12 plates even if the OP doesn't take possession until March.0 -
Hopefully the dealer has just agreed the sale and taken the money rather than fully registered the car with the DVLA.
It sounds like the dealer hasn't got the car yet themselves yet.
If they have have fully registed it then yes it will have to stay as a 61 plate I think.Well if it's been registered it will have to have 61 plates, it would be illegal to give it 12 plates even if the OP doesn't take possession until March.0 -
Surely the dealer would need all the import documents and the chassis/engine numbers in order to register the car ?. Would they not actually need the car to do this?.Never Knowingly Understood.

No, the dealer doesn't need to physically take delivery of the car. It is all on computer. The factory would register the details on the computer at time of manufacture, this would instantly appear on the head office computer and would be transmitted to the dealer when allocated to that dealer.
This allows him to crack on with the paper work.
To the others, yes the car will be registered, the DVLA will have the OP down as the registered vehicle keeper. That's the only way the dealer can sell the car and claim it for his monthly target.
To the OP, badgering the dealer is not going to speed the car delivery up. Unless the dealer lied to you, it is not his fault that the car has not been delivered to him. He quoted you 6 weeks, it looks like it is going to be 7 weeks. Delivery dates are always estimated, as the dealer cannot guarantee delivery as he is at the mercy of the manufacturer and the transport company that delivers the cars.0 -
Dealer doesnt need the car as above, That how i got an LX model with a higher spec. They registered and delivered the wrong car to me. So i got alloys and a few other toys free.
Your not losing though, They gave you a discount to have the car registered early.
And as already mentioned it loses tons of value just being registered in your name so a couple of weeks wont make any difference. In a few weeks its 6 months older.
When you come to sell nobody will think damn it was registered Jan20th when i wanted a car that was registered at the end of Feb. A year down the line it will be priced the same as other 61 plate cars registered last year.
Thats why you got a discount. Wait 2 months for a 12 plate car and no discount?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
