Curry goat

I'm experimenting. I've put in the crockpot a kilo of diced goat, a tin of spinach, a tin of tomatoes, a tin of coconut milk, and some mild curry powder.

I've not cooked goat before - does it sound okay? Anything else I should add? I've had curry goat in Caribbean restaurants and loved it, but I didn't have a recipe so I've improvised. At £2.42kg, it was too good a chance to miss.

Sounds yummy! I've never cooked goat curry myself, but if you Google curried goat recipes then quite a few options come up.

Hugh FW's Curry Goat recipe is here:

Saw him make it on TV but I've never tried it myself.

  • Oh rats - I forgot the onion - need to add that.

  • Well it tasted just fine but it was far too bony - no wonder the meat was so cheap; it seemed to be chopped ribs and chunks of shoulder blade. I shall go for the boneless variety next time - at £5.00/kg that's still cheaper than lamb.

    Curry Goat

I thought I was being daring when I bought some ox-tail last week.

I've never tried goat, or even had it as a menu choice. Think I'll have to broaden my horizons. :D

Oh My goat is divine! I'm jealous. My mums family are jamaican so I was practically weaned on the stuff. There are about a million different reciepes that change according to where you are from or from grandma to grandma but here are some basic pointers.

Season the meat first. marinade it in curry powder, black pepper and lots of chopped fresh garlic for at least 12 hours before you cook it. The garlic helps tenderise the meat therefore reducing cooking time.

Don't just buy the boneless meat, you could try getting 2lbs of boneless and 1lb of boney meat. The quantities are up to you but the stuff in the bones is what makes the sauce according to my mum! The bones also add flavour to the curry.

The simplest way to do it is to get the well marinaded meat and cuck it in a pan with water and lots of chopped onions and garlic.

Cook it for a fair few hours, towards the end of cooking and a few diced potatoes (optional but makes it go further and they tast lovely cooked in the curry) tomatoes and peppers (for traditonal carribean flavour use scotch bonnet but be warned they are mega hot, if not adjust the peppers to your taste any will do)

Serve with boiled rice and salad - don't forget to invite me! Yummy!

When I was younger it was served with white rice. These days brown or basmati works just as well .

I love curried goat, but the only time I get to eat it is at Notting Hill Carny, sucking the meat off the bones is the best bit. I'd like to try it at home, but never seen goat for sale anywhere.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
