    Yes thanks Fermi thats it. I only stopped paying around 12 months ago & wrote to them several times before they acknowledged my proposal to pay token payments so I've definately acknowledged the debt just not the 2k.

    They send those out like confetti.

    1) Check with Halifax to see what the status of the debt is. i.e. whether it has been sold or of MC are just acting on their behalf.

    2) Make the offer of token payments to MC in writing, pointing out that in any legal action you will ask the court to order payments at the same amount.

    3) Obtain a breakdown of the current balance so you can see how and where the extra amount has been added. Interest and some fixed charges may be legitimate, but if the debt collector has lumped on some disproportionate charges of their own then you may not be legally obliged to pay those.

    4) Don't panic. Legal action is unlikely, but even if it did happen, if you don't ignore it and respond promptly and fairly, then you shouldn't be ordered to pay more than you can afford.
