Title says it all. I just bought 6 big clementines from greengrocers for £1, I live near a very big Tesco's but as far as I can remember even the "Market Value" clementines were more expensive than this.

Also, I asked (what I assume to be) the owner how much a small crate of clementines would be (the crates had about 60 fruits in each), but got promptly told "We don't sell by the crate". Why would they not sell crates - do they really want me to go through the hassle of buying 10 loads of 6, and walk home with it all in a bag? Do they not realise the benefits we can both get from buying in bulk? Are there any places I could buy fruit in bulk from?
my local shop is selling clemmies for 4.99 a box plus they have some pound deals for my diet

Easily I can save money if I go to a market stall or greengrocer store. I have been eating loads of fruit which is in season so even cheaper, am just taken a back at the prices Tesco, Morrison, Waitrose...etc all charge as they just price themselves right out of any logic.
Plums: £1.99 to £2.99 per kilo. OR, £4.99 per kilo in Tescos/Sainsburys, £6.99 in Morrisons!
Oranges: 5 for £1 or in Supermarkets 30p each (and much smaller- many dried up inside) or 4 for £2 (for the large size which IMO is the same as a market stall size.
Apples are various prices but normally less IMO.
I tend to stick to frozen veg- fruit I can easily dump in my bag, eat it throughout the day, carry around with me but veg isn't so easy -I often have to keep stuff with me for the day and I'd rather not risk the stuff going bad as a result.
I would add that lots of the time the downside to this is that fruit especially doesn't always last as long. It does taste much better then supermarket stuff but you don't get to keep it for as long and would need to shop more frequently. But once you become addicted to the stuff its not hard to 'find' the time to visit the greengrocer stores/market stalls more!
Very worth it if you can do it.0 -
My local butcher does greengrocery as well. Sometitmes they are cheaper, sometimes not, but what I like best is because I live alone, they will sell me two potatoes, or one little gem lettuce, so waste is not a problem for me.I Believe in saving money!!!:T

I find the local market is a lot cheaper and they will often do me a box or crate deal on things like nectarines or cherries that I then share with the neighbours. I find that sometimes their range is more limited but they always have a few unusual things which are much much cheaper, e.g. 4 figs for a pound or 3 mangos for a pound.I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly

My local green gorcers prices vary (Peppers were 29p each a few months ago and now 70p each) maybe it's a season thing. In the summer they were doing massive corn on the cobs for 39p which is much better value than supermarkets (but they don't have any at the moment).0

I sometimes buy some items from Kingston-upon-Thames market e.g. garlic is £1 for six, in ASDA and Tesco's for example they sell one bulb for about 30p, Tesco's sell four for £1. Still works out cheaper shopping at Kingston-upon-Thames market.
I guess it also depends what you're intending to purchase as well. Some items aren't necessarily cheaper in greengrocer stores or markets. What I tend to do is make a list of all the items I'm after before heading out to do a shop which also includes the prices of other stores. I normally check somewhere like mySupermarket first though can be a bit time consuming. Still, I manage to find things are cheaper if I shop at different stores, market stalls, etc, doing it this way. Also is reassuring knowing they are cheaper as well, if I didn't check first I'd most likely leave a store empty handed thinking items might not be as cheap as they appear.0 -
Incidentally, Morrisons are currently selling the following for 30p until 19/02/2012:
4 pack of apples
4 pack of pears
1.5kg baking potatoes
1kg carrots
500g onion pack

I buy most of my fruit and some veg at a local market. I will buy some things from the supermarket when they are on offer or if the market has not got something I really wanted because it can be seasonal or dependent upon the weather.
At the weekend I got:
3 small punnets of strawberries £1
2 small punnets of blueberries £1
2lb of salad potatoes £1
A medium bowl of button mushrooms (about 20) 50p
6 chinese pears £1
1kg of pink lady apples £1.30
1 mango 50p
4 peppers £1
A large bowl of small vine tomatoes (more than 60) £1
12 small bananas £1
1 punnet of dark grapes £1
I'm sure the fruit and veg would have cost at least double in a supermarket. All you have to do is sort it out, wash and use the softer fruits first etc. :T:A0
