Sorry, scrap this - it's for a forum signature! (NOT suitable for the MSE forum may I hasten to add!)
Try (url=http://yourreferrallink.com)(img)http://locationofthebanner(/img)(/url)
Replace the () brackets with [] brackets.
So (url=http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/)(img)http:// img76.imageshack.us/img76/2948/msebannerexamplepl9.jpg (/img)(/url), would look like this when the [] brackets are used - hover your mouse cursor over the 'banner' to see the link in the status bar:

The site owners might have removed the functionality from the forums that would allow you to do this. You might want to read 'the rules' http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=305655 before you go any further. PTR = Paid to Refer doesn't it?
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
Oops, I just realised COOLTRIKERCHICK wants to put a referral banner onto his email signature. That would be HTML indeed, but then I think the entire email would have to be in HTML(?)
Sorry, like ABH, I thought it's for a forum signature too - i.e. the PTR site's forum signature (not MSE).
ABH, of course you're right about the MSE rules not permitting this. G0 -

Looks like I owe COOLTRIKERCHICK an appology too. Sorry COOLTRIKERCHICK.
As for putting such a signature in your email. I would advise against it, people get targetted by such email on a daily basis and if they are a member of a block list like spamhause et al. You may find yourself on such a list, then those of your friends whose ISP's employs such a tool to prevent spam won't get your emails.
As a result, you're next question here will be: Why don't my friends receive my email. I know this from experience, after a 'friend' used to target me with paid to click stuff years ago, I submitted his address to a few block lists after a warnings. Oh the fun he had getting off them.It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
thanks guys.... had no intention of putting it into mse sig.....as i totally agree with their rules etc.....
i just thought i might put into my email sigs......but now that you have mentioned the above advising me not to.... i can now see what it might cause...... thanks peeps....
and apologies excepted........as you were only looking after the interest of other mse'rs........Work to live= not live to work0
