Buying untaxed car from dealer

    • If it's untaxed, can I legally take it for a test drive on public roads before I buy it?
    • Could the dealer tax it before selling it to me without adding an extra owner (himself) to the log book?
    • Although I'll be the one literally buying it, my other half will be the registered keeper and main driver - do they need to be present?
    • Will I be able to get it taxed and insured on the day I buy it?
    Cheers!

Yes you can if the dealer has trade plates.
No they can't tax it themselves unless they have the appropriate insurance to do so. When I bought my car last week it came with 7 days free insurance. The company faxed a copy of the certificate to the dealer so they could tax it.
Yes the person who is going to be the main keeper needs to be present to sign the registration document.
If you have the appropriate documentation yes you can. However as it is disabled tax class, you can only tax it at a DVLA office.

What if I want to buy a car at auction, and need to drive it off the premises the same evening - how can I insure myself for AN. Other vehicle. My insurance has ceased on my policy for a written-off insurance claim.

You will need to buy insurance with immediate cover (over the phone or online). Online is better (via an insurer who provides certs online to print off) if you want the satisfaction of a cert. in your possession just in case you get pulled up on the way home!

Looks like one way to do it is to wait until purchasing the vehicle, then take out a temp policy online with tempcover.com at about £25 for 1 day.
  • Thanks - did you have to buy the car, then sort the tax at the DVLA in person, then collect the car?

I bought and collected the car then taxed it but I didn't know it was on disabled tax.

Although it didn't have a tax disc it was showing as being taxed on the DVLA vehicle check webpage so I took a chance in driving it the few miles home.

It was insured and mot'd and unless you get flagged on the ANPR cameras then you'd have to be driving really stupidly to get pulled around here.

When I went to tax it the post office staff were unable to enter the reg in the system , I was then told it was on disabled tax so I went straight to the local DVLA to tax it and sort the new V5 out.

OP, how local is your 'local' dvla office? if its not far then you can change the class of the vehicle and tax the car fairly easily but if its too far away then you will have to wait for the v5 to come back from the dvla with the new plg class on it before you can tax the car. This can take weeks

I've spoken to the dealer and he's agreed to do the tax for me in my name if I get insurance and leave a deposit.

The office is (reasonably) local to where I live, i.e. same city but the car itself is about 40 miles from the nearest DVLA office, so I'd end up making a lot of long trips before I even get to drive it away, unless the dealer does the tax for me.
