I have recently received a notification from EDF that they are to increase my dd to cover my usage. I know that I am underpaying on the dd however I save the difference every month in a savings account which is offset against my mortgage. When I receive a bill I then pay off the amount that is outstanding so I am not behind. The last time EDF put up my payment they said that they could not reduce it to the previous level. I was just wondering if they are allowed to dictate the level of dd or can I say what I would like it to be providing I am paying off the remaining amount in full?
If I can't choose what I pay each month, am I better off cancelling the dd and foregoing the 6% dd discount and saving the full amount in my savings account?

If you take what you do to the extreme, we would all set the DD to a £1 and then pay the balance when the quarterly statement is issued. This is not how DDs are supposed to work and suppliers will try to ensure the DD is set to the correct level. You may be able to haggle slightly but I suspect they will not allow you to keep paying off the excess every quarter.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
