Time to move it on?

Hi all

I currently run a 2003 Mondeo Ghia X, with around 80k on the clock

Last week had a terrible noise, turns out i broke a OSF spring, however despite the terrible noise going it now has a lot of noise when i go down bumps, suggesting something else is on the way out

Should I just bear the cost and replace the damper etc, or is it time to move it on and look for a newer version?

  • Probably just needs a new spring.

Get a garage you trust to have a look and get a price, shouldnt be too expensive.

Most people would suggest you change both front springs.

Wonder to get a full set of lowering springs and replace the lot

So spending thousands on a newer car is gonna save money versus the cost of new springs/dampers?

Get yourself some aftermarket springs from Eibach (£150-£200), some Bilstien B4 shocks (£50 a corner) and you'll have a car that handles and feels as good as any German "prestige" make.

Well if you think about it, your thinking of selling up because it's got problems...... Most people do this, most people sell cars when there's something wrong, with the only real exception being the fools who buy NEW cars every 2 years.

So the chance of buying someone else's problems is very high indeed.

The only saving grace is that some people are truly stupid, they get the car fixed for it's MOT and then sell it when the headlight bulb goes, because "it's starting to cost money"....
So sometimes you can get a good car with nothing wrong, BUT then buying a car from an idiot carrys it's own risks, it's probably never been serviced properly and it's probably wearing 3 "Ditch Finder XL"s and a bald "Spider Hamster Wing Wong" :rotfl:

As the general population becomes more stupid, I dread the idea of buying another car, I really do :(

I was already thinking of selling it for an ST220, but cant find one at all with low ish miles :-)

and the ditch finders are by far the best tyres i have had, and at only £20 a corner I consider it money well spent :-)

Better the devil you know I always think. Springs/shocks are not expensive in the grand scheme of things, and a scary number of people seem to neglect changing their oil on time/ever, which on any modern engine will lead to VERY expensive repair bills when they sell it because they've noticed the occasional misfire or whatever.

Don't knock those Ditch Finders! I've done 12K on one so far and still has 4-5mm of tread left. Not bad for a £30 fitted front tyre! :rotfl:
  • You're going to sell a car because of a bush failing, and needing a new spring?

Get it fixed. It'd be incredibly silly to sell because of that.

^^ Unless as mentioned a few posts back, the OP just wants a new car, in which case don't try to justify it.... Just go for it :p
