Fair points about the AAT/CIMA, I started as an Accounts Assistant with no prior experience and was advised to do AAT before the more advanced qualifications
It's still a lot of training for a career path I don't want to pursue so not for me I dont think
No post-secondary school qualifications to speak of (unless you count the 1st year of AAT) but my work experience can be summed up as:
A couple of years retail after school including a supervisors role,
A few years in a customer service heavy role in hospitality,
And the last few years spent in Accounting - Accounts Assistant, Purchase Ledger, General Admin stuff
The reason i have a fairly short term view at the moment is that a move abroad may be on the cards in the next 5 years or so and I'd like to get us as sorted as possible before then (save hard, get a house and hopefully have something to rent out/appreciate in value (hopefully!) while we're away)
I'm not expecting to walk into a job that pays £100k or anything but if I could hit the £30-£40k bracket that would be great and a massive help towards our plans
Thanks for all the input so far everyone :T
I don’t mean to be rude but I think you’re being pretty unrealistic here.
You don’t have any qualifications past school level, your experience, although wide spread doesn’t seem to be much past entry level in low – mid paid jobs. You say you’re willing to work hard in order to be earning 30-40k in 1-2 years, but the likelyhood is, it won’t happen. Plenty, if not MILLIONS of people are in the same boat as you, if only it was that easy! There isn’t a quick fix that enables you to earn loads of money!
IMO the only possibility you have here is sales AND to succeed in this line of work and bring in the cash, you need to be a certain type of person, you either have it or you don’t. It’s not just a case of work hard and you will reap the rewards.0 -

Completely agree.
Even in sales you are very unlikely to earn £30k+ within 2 years of starting... I have never yet met such a salesman. Unless we are talking pyramid schemes or something.. Steady salesman job involves junior positions first, getting to know industry you are working in and training on product/services before left to your own devices and able to earn commission on top of often fairly basic salary (which increases as your name/achievements enable you to negotiate good deal, often provided with extra responsibilities such as team leading).
Believe you me, if I thought I can earn £30k plus before the age of 30 without qualifications I wouldn't have spent weekends on end at college passing my ACCA!!0 -
Have you thought of the police - salaries for PCs start at over £23K and at leqst £27.5K after two years.0

Fair points and i know i'm not the only person looking for these types of roles but they do exist. Train Driver was suggested - you wouldn't normally have prior experience of this job but after 9-12 months of training you could reasonably expect to be taking home £30k+ although jobs are (unsurprisingly) scarce..
Trainee/Assistant Store Manager roles are another one where having wide spread experience could be a bonus because the role calls for adaptability and, again, after 12 months training (and depending on the store etc) you could be looking around the £30k mark
I know it's not simply a case of saying "ok, I'll be a train driver" and walking into the training course and it will take a large slice of luck on top of you skills and experience on to even get noticed because so many people are looking for these jobs but they do exist and I just wanted some advice and opinions of other jobs of these types
I agree, on the whole, about sales roles but it's too easy to say something like "you need to be a certain type of person, you either have it or you don’t" - wherever i've worked that has had a sales department there have been the stereotypical brash, cocky, in-your-face type salesmen and also people who you would think were too shy, friendly or timid to be successful in sales but they have just worked hard, stayed friendly and polite and have done just as well as the rest. I, personally, can't stand the 'hard sell' and feel much more inclined to do business with someone who is just polite and not pushy. Of course there is still the whole aspect of hitting targets, learning to deal with (near constant) rejection and all the rest that comes with sales roles but I think a lot of people are needlessly put off by thinking "I'm not a natural salesman" when they really shouldn't0 -

I agree this is probably the best/most reliable way of guaranteeing yourself a good income for years to come but if you don't know what area of work you want to be in it can be absolutely soul-destroying studying/working in an area that you can't stand
I really wish accounting or HR or something appealed to me and I could study, train and work my way up the ranks but, so far, nothing I have tried has 'sung' to me
Oh, and Dunroamin - thanks for the suggestion but I think joining the police really does take a certain type of person which im not

I looked in to applying to become a train driver a year ago, the number of applications compared to the number of posts is wild. Also, although officially, you don''t need any experience, they tend to take on people who have some kind of related experience, or transferable skills ie people who are already in the industry or have a techncial or engineering background.
I didnt say you have to be bold, brash and pushy to earn the big bucks in person, you don't. But you do need to have certain qualities and that's a fact.
I hope you do get the financial success that you desire to fund your plans. But can I offer you one last bit of advice?
This thread seems to be discussing how you can make good money through certains jobs, but have you ever heard the saying "You don't get rich working for someone else?". Maybe a path to consider?0 -
Sorry, but why do you bang on about accountancy/finance? Do you think that is the only path you can go for qualifications? No one is saying that you must go finance path, what is said is that you better have "some" qualification if you want to earn £30k/40k+ within relatively short time (though I would forget about the 2 yrs).
You are right there are some jobs where you can earn a lot without qualifications... but these jobs are rare and usually reserved for people with "calling" IYKWIM. I do know a train driver and he has a degree in planning, just always loved trains and so retrained as a train driver. Given that these jobs are rare you need to show proper enthusiasm nowadays to show you are the one!!
Looking at this http://www.careerbuilder.co.uk/Article/CB-173-Job-Search-10-Jobs-That-Pay-%C2%A330k-a-Year/ another vocation that crossed my mind is Air Traffic controller... I know few of those, and I am not aware of them having any other training then the provided training... Not sure how it works there though to be honest. I only knew them once they were older, so I cannot judge the beginnings.. however now they are quite well off!0 -

I don't mean to 'bang on' about accounting but it's an area that I have some experience so it's easier to use as an example and it's also an area that has been suggested by others in this thread. I wholeheartedly agree that having more qualifications is a good way (probably the best way) of getting yourself a higher salary but, as I mentioned, a move abroad may be on the cards in the not-too-distant future so going in at entry level and spending a few years training doesn't appeal to me at the moment because I might not get chance to get the practical experience to back it up or reap the benefits and the qualifications may not be transferable. Really I'm just looking for a bit of a different perspective outside of my own thoughts - two heads and all that...
Sure have! I think that's why roles with targets and OTEs are starting to appeal more to me because, short of starting my own business, I would like to feel that I am getting rewarded based on the work and effort I am putting in (on a day-to-day basis as opposed to long term training)19Lottie82 wrote:but have you ever heard the saying "You don't get rich working for someone else?"
I think one of the things that made me feel disillusioned with accounting (I know, I know, broken record
) is that you may save or recover thousands of pounds for the business through your actions and get nothing more than a pat on the back but the sales guys bring in any business and get commission on it - even if they only bring in business worth £200!!! 0
