hiya, we have a shop and the listing fees are a lot less than normal listings, but the fvf are higher. i.e something that would cost £2 to list is about 12p in shop inventory. plus we pay £5 per month subscription.
the downside is that if you don't sell unusual items that have little other competion, you won't get seen at all. we sell things that haven't got an awful lot of competition, we come quite high in the shop listings for our main lines, but it's still a struggle. there is no way we could have a lot of our items in normal BIN listings, the fees are very prohibitive, as some of our things are £75 - £130.
we try to maintain exposure by having a few cheap ( under £10 ), items in normal listings. our main competitors are large companies who have 100's of items in normal listings, so we can't hope to compete with them, we just try to have things in our shop that they don't sell, plus we undercut them on the more expensive items by £10 or so.
If you are going to be selling in an area with tons of competiton, like console games or dvd's etc. unless you have pretty much unlimited resources to get 100's of things listed, I would think having a shop would be a non-starter. however if your shop is "speciality" and there are not a lot of others, then go for it.
