Dividing 2 rooms - alternative options

2 up 2 down terrace.
The front and back rooms downstairs have been opened up completely making one very large room (not via an archway).
we've never liked the layout and the idea has always been to divide the rooms again back to how they were originally.
I was going to do the work myself but due to my problems with my legs getting worse there is now no way I can do it.
Currently we have curtains (black and white flocked pattern) up dividing the room. Anyone walking past would just think we have flocked wallpaper on the back wall of the front room.
However, it's not the look we intend to keep.
So, outside of building a stud wall, and fitting a door and frame, can anyone else suggest an alternative way we can divide the rooms? I was thinking of some sort of bookshelf (such as the IKEA Expedit) on each side of the opening.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

Restoring the room to two living spaces is driven among other things, by budget and personal taste. I would go for something like this (for a contemporary look):

You can probably reproduce the effect for less money....
A two up and down suggested a more mature property. Victorian rooms (for example) appear to incorporate division using folding doors. Some here on ebay (you might be able to copy the effect):

Some form of floor to ceiling storage could be installed (as you suggest). I would go for something closed at the back.
At the end of the day you have a nice large space. If restoring the original layout isn't an option (stud and a door) I would make the most of what I had and spend the cash on making the space - as is - as comfortable/attractive as possible (e.g. painting and dressing the room). Just my two pennyworth.

I have seen some really nice wooden folding doors, but they will be more expensive probably than a simple room divider.0

Ikea do a hanging panel system, it's like a rail and you can choose whatever panels you want and they hang from floor to ceiling. These are one of the panels they do.
