How do I do this?! I know I was unemployed, but I wasn't getting sickness benefits or dole money, I was just living on my overdraft. How can I show proof I have not had any income? will bank statements be enough? Tax office? How do I explain my unusual situation?

Yes bank statements prove that no other form of income was coming into your account throughout the period. Plus contact the tax office and ask for a p60 that covers that period, that will show that no income was generated at all.

What on earth are you talking about? P60s are provided by an employer, never HMRC, so as the OP hasn't been working he won't have a P60. And how does a bank statement prove no income, all it can show is that no money was paid into that account but he could have another account or have been working cash in hand (OP, I'm not suggesting this has been happening, just pointing out the fallacy in karlahine's argument).

Make a "long" appointment with your doctor- (explain to the booking clerk that you need additional time).
Tell him about what has happened and ask him for an explanatory letter/sicknote that you can show to the council/jobcentre.
Make an appointment with council/jobcentre (take your mother or a sympathetic friend with you) - write down everything that you want to explain and take it your notes with you.

Ask to see a benefits adviser so that you can claim any benefits that are due.
