Good luck slig. I'm with you on salary ranges, given that they rarely want to pay more than the minimum there seems little point to giving a higer figure other than to try to suck people into applying in the hope that they might get more. It would be far more honest if they did indeed just say this is the salary we will pay.

Nonsense the reason they do this is not to suck you in but to show how far you can progress through increments within your grade, so you would start at the bottom of your grade and through good performance and length of service progress through the increments to the top of your grade, the first increment being paid normally after the first 6 months. This is how people are rewarded for loyalty and performance.

Gibson, that may be how it works where you are but I can assure you it's not the case everywhere. You're entitled to your opinion but just because somebody else has a different one doesn't necessarily mean it's nonsense.
  • I've just started using salary ranges in ads to bring an end to pointless haggling from applicants. We have an amount for a job in our budget. It's a fair salary for that job as we compare to similar vacancies/roles elsewhere. We are a small firm and cannot suddenly magic up a few extra grand for people.

When we advertise a job for £25,000 we get people who think 'oh it says 25k but really I'm worth £30k and I'm so wonderful that when I'm offered the job that's what I can negotiate.' Well, then we have to faff about negotiating with them (with me thinking, look, the ad and all the info said £25k, can't you read?) then they either turn down the job or we kill ourselves to find that extra £5k that it turns out they really WERENT worth paying. We had someone come back who insisted they would only accept the job for DOUBLE the salary we'd advertised and discussed because that was what they were currently earning. !!!!!!?

So now if the salary is going to be £25k, I advertise with a range of £20-£25k as I hope that makes the point to everyone that £25k is the absolute max ANYONE can get. Even if you have your 200 metres swimming badge and a letter from your mummy. First time I've tried that and I'm interviewing this week so fingers crossed it's cut out the unrealistic people who want to waste our time.

So anyway after all that rant - I wouldn't start thinking the upper range advertised is unavailable - we can't be the only firm who does this.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.
