That's interesting as I had exactly the same experience in Florida a couple of years ago (flying back to Gatwick from Tampa). I bought a new TSA lock especially for the trip, but they cut it off and left the bits in my case with the calling card. Maybe they have lost their set of keys?!

Now I just use the case inbuilt lock, but set at the correct combination and hope that they lock it up after they have finished the scans.

Don't bother with TSA locks, they are expensive and useless.

On the same trip my OH's suitcase was damaged (metal frame completely bent) so wasn't a very nice trip home that time.

Precisely why I use cable ties. If you look on the internet there are hundreds of people who have had their suitcases ruined. So it just makes it worse when you know you specifically bought the right lock too!
  • We've had our cases opened several times on the way back from the US, but never any problems with this. We do use TSA locks, but they are small and lightweight and weren't expensive. They have always been opened properly and relocked.

I sometimes think though that our cases are targeted because we have the TSA locks, and they are therefore easy to open. Is there a quota for the proportion of cases which have to be searched?
