SOME employers may have a policy of doing this, but even if they do the policy can be ignored if there's enough justification.

And some do everything in their power NOT to promote from within.. sigh...
  • Most companies advertise both internally and externally at the same time. I have only worked for one company where they advertised internally first, interviewed candidates and then when they were not suitable for the role advertised it externally. Personally I think that was the better way to do it because more often than not the role goes to an internal candidate.

No they do not have to.

But that's a company policy - the question was 'do they have to' and no - they do not have to.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

If that is true, and I suspect it is based on your own limited experience rather than any hard evidence, then it is because they choose to, not because they have to.

Which is why I said my personal opinion was that I think that it is better that they advertise internally first before advertising externally.

We all know that it is up to the company how they do it, but yes from PERSONAL LIMITED experience as you put it, is what I have found.

Er, no you didn't - you stated it as a fact without any qualification or suggestion that it was an opinion:

The question wasn't 'what's your opinion on this' - it was 'do they have to'. And no, they don't.
