Used to do a week in hand, years ago but that was only a week! A month seems very unreasonable but maybe that is why they offer the advance option. Their methods seem very outdated but maybe they don't see a reason to change (ie. few new starters).
  • That really does not sound right at all. Month in hand usually means you get paid at the end of the Month or early the following Month depending on paydate. I can't imagine many people being happy with that arrangement. As for payroll cut offs the 6th of the Month is very early! I have payroll cut offs of 7 to 10 days before payday depending on the client, but if I am aware of a change that will be late, ie newstarter, I can extend that deadline. If you have missed it by 1 day I'm amazed they are not willing to do anything more.

My DH gets paid a month behind, but I think its because he is a personal trainer and so he works different hours every month, so it takes a while for the payroll dept to sort out everyones pay. So when he started working there, because he started at the beginning of a month, he didnt get paid for 8 weeks. It would have been less if he had started say, mid month.

But if you are on a annual salary where you get paid the same each month, it seems odd they would do this.
  • When you leave you might lose a month's pay because they completely forget and deny that you were ever working a month in hand.

    Ever the cynic ;)

Just to clarify - if I had started on 1 st of the month I still wouldn't get paid til end of march so nothing to do with payroll date cut off. It's regular hours too so nothing to work out there.
I guess that when I leave I will get 2 months pay at the end of the leaving month.

Are you sure you mean a month in hand and not a month in arrears - many people confuse the two.
