I started a new job this week - 6th Feb, which is going well, but, I won't get paid for February until the end of March!
Policy there is to work a month in hand. How are people supposed to manage on that?
I was only on Jobseekers for 3 weeks, luckily, so don't qualify for social fund help.
Is this normal for big companies (about 600 employees)? I've had 4 jobs before this, with smaller companies, and always got paid at the end of the month.

I posted a thread about this couple of weeks ago, All you can do is explain look I need money to survive, talk to the job seekers office again and ask them what to do, you can't be expected to live on fresh air. Congrats on the new job by the way.0 -
No, it's not normal. What does happen is that if you start after the payroll cut off date, which is usually mid month, then you might have to wait until the next pay run for money. (Although in previous places I've worked the company had usually provided the facility to get an advance on pay, which is then settled on the next pay run)
However, 6th Feb seems very early for this. I would check this out with HR. It might be one of these myths that new people are told because someone did have to wait because of the reason above.0 -
I can have a cash advance of £100 per week paid at the end of Feb. So I'll get £300 at end of Feb. Will help a little, then at the end of March will get Febs wage minus the £300. So a couple of very tight months.0

It is the company policy - there were 3 new starters and we had a speech from the payroll manager as part of the induction. Nothing to do with payroll cut off time0

On the brightside when you leave you could possible end up getting paid from two jobs for one month! The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!
4 people on the ignore list....Bliss!0 -

The month in hand is only making them pay the OP at the end of March instead of Feb as they have told them the cut off is the 6th of the month so if they were there before the 6th they would have got paid at the end of Feb.0 -
no you wont lose a month surely as they will just be paid at the end of the month that they leave.

Were you in the same meeting? thats not what the OP said.

This is not a payroll cutoff date issue. It is a month in hand. So at the end of March under month in hand, OP will only be paid for February. March will be paid in April and so on.
Hence OP DOES need to be concerned about pay in the last month when leaving the company.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

yes so when the op leaves they get paid the part of full mth they would have worked from the day they resign to the day they lave plus the month in hand
I have never heard of that before for monthly paid staff only weekly0
