One could argue that somebody who plays drum and bass music at 3am is also mentally ill. Where do you draw the distinction?.

Thats probably the worst analogy Ive heard in some time.

Someone playing the drums at 3am would fall under the ignorant, selfish & stupid category surely... not on a par with someone who perhaps involuntarily screams or shouts surely...

Perhaps, but they will both keep you awake.

Also, I'm not sure how you can diagnose her through the party wall.

    I havent diagnosed her.

Ive offered a few explanations for her behaviour because I thought it was important to make the distinction between someone who may be behaving in an ignorant, antisocial manner, and someone who may be doing so involuntarily.

Thanks for taking to time to ... rise to the challange.

Always nice to see how people react.

I admit I occassionally get sarcasm overdosed (I blame the medication and the over-contibution to this forum!).

But as Chris_m rightly pointed out, I (nearly always) temper it with best advice too.

Ok, I'll get back to being boringly serious as I've had my fun for today.

    OK, You win.

The downside of this forum is that you only have the written word to base a rant / reaction on. We don't getthe tone of voice, or inflexions etc, so its difficult to tell whether people are being sarcastic or they really mean it!

Dementia (which is probably what the lady suffers from) is very close to home at the moment so I'm quite defensive about it.

    No offence meant.

  • That poor woman, it sounds as if she has some sort of paranoia and is scared in the night. I don't know what your friend can do apart from move to be honest.
Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool

  • Does your friend know if this woman has any visitors, family or carers ? Maybe a phone call to social services might be worth a try. The poor woman obviously needs help. It must be very distressing to be kept awake like this too. Dementia is a terrible thing if that's what it is and I'm sure something could be done to help resolve the situation on both sides.
  • I don't think anyone is complaining that the elderly woman is ILL. We can all get ill, and we all feel sympathy for their plight.

But when their condition becomes YOUR problem too i.e. your sleep is disturbed due to their symptoms, thus causing YOU sleepless nights, stress and possible ill health - something needs to be done.

Everyone has the right to peace and quiet in their own home, whether they own it or rent it - and so someone somewhere needs to step in to rectify the situation so as to help ALL parties.

So do I when I can't sleep, watch telly and shout at it. But obviously your friend/you are mental health experts and can diagnose Tourettes and schizophrenia, so I'm afraid I can't suggest anything useful.

i agree with what your saying but my gf has schizophrenia and she randomly screams and tends to do it a lot more at night

ive asked her on many occasion what it is she's doing but she like denies it ever took place

What's with all the moral indignation in this thread? The OP has an issue with a noisy neighbour. Inform the LL that you want to move out and hope he is sympathising. I would suggest making up a reason such as: your friend's parent died, your friend has lost their job and cannot pay the rent, your friend has been diagnosed with a mental illness, etc. If your friend says that they want out due to the crazy lady upstairs, the LL will be less sympathetic as he might think it'd be harder to get a new tenant!

    That's just women in general.
