Thank you for the post mumsiemum, it's really nice to know that I'm not alone in feeling like this. Had a pretty crap week again, works been tough and the kids are getting restless for half term. I've managed to make £110 on eBay in 3 weeks and hoping to make the same this week. Have saved another 100 quid towards the debt too. It's just never enough!
Also phoned sky and got a 1/3 cut off the price! It's my only luxury these days!

I'm exactly the same, because you're too busy looking at the mountain left to climb to see how far you've pulled yourself up already!

  • Hi Arty,
Just thought I would pop by and see how you are getting on. I haven't been on for a month. I've gone a bit slack with it all.... I need to put more effort in, I got a bit distracted / lazy.
I hope you are still plodding on and having some success with your plan. You too have been a bit quiet! Hope all is well! x

  • Hi gmood,

Been plodding along, still feeling very down in the dumps about it. When our payment shows we will be in the £18,000s which is nice and we have managed to save over £2000. We are on track to be paid off in September but I'm still not happy.

Hope you can get back into the debt busting soon. How is your hubby? Is he back at work yet?

  • Hi Arty,

I wonder if its the winter blues thats put us in this mood! The darkness and crap weather puts a downer on everything. I have nearly paid 5 k off since I started my plan but like you I don't feel happy about it.
Hubby went back to work 3 days ago and then today went for a check up / xray and found that one of the pins in his foot has snapped and he needs to go back in for another operation! Not good news at all. God know how we will cope. But I'm still trying to stay positive.... somehow.... its hard though. x

  • Hi Gmood,

Really sorry to hear about hubby's foot, hope he is on the mend again bless you.

I'm still not feeling very good, I think christmas looming is making me feel more negative because I just keep wanting to do more but I can't.

Still hoping to pay debt off in 9 months time, but haven't managed to save anymore with christmas and we had to buy a new bed as ours broke. (Although we did get a £1200 bed for £350)

Just keep plodding along I guess...

  • Wow you got a real bargain with the bed! I could do with a new bed too. Ours is way past its best, we've been planning to get a new one for years but never had the spare cash.
Try not to feel too negative about christmas. I'm the same and its only to be expected. I just keep thinking past christmas to the new year, a fresh start and a new goal to get going and get paid off.
9 Months is no time at all! You are doing incredibly well! Dont forget that!

  • Hi gmood,

We got our bed frame from ebay and then the matress from a charity shop that has brand new ones sealed, ours is a John Lewis king size one and we paid £150 for it and its £600 in the shop.

I haven't had a very good time over christmas. I've pretty much completely isolated myself because I've felt so negative and low. I had a breakdown in the middle of a restaurant on Wednesday and started crying uncontrollably in front of everyone. So I took myself to the doctors yesterday, I realise I can't carry on this way. I am just scared that when the debt is paid off I won't feel 'normal' again.

Hopefully I will start to feel better soon. I can't say I'm looking forward to going back to work next week especially if I can't keep my emotions in check.

Anyway, I hope you had a great christmas and new year, the only way is up I guess!

  • Hi Em,

Oh god thats not good news!! Poor you!! I know its easier said than done but really you can't let it get you down, you are doing so well! You've paid off 21K for gods sake! Thats incredible in the time you have done it!

This time of year is always hard though. I really know what you mean! I got through xmas ok for a change but have done the opposite to what I normally do.... I usually feel positive about starting a new year but this year I'm feeling down about it. I think its just knowing that its another year of doing nothing but pay debt! I can't even be bothered to get back selling on Ebay and I've tons to sell. I feel deflated. ;-(((

When you say you are scared you won't feel normal again once you've paid it off.... is that cos you have been in debt so long and it's been the main focus of your life to pay it off? if it is what you mean I am exactly the same. I have sometimes wondered if half the reason its taken me so long is because I've subconsciously enjoyed having a purpose in life.... sad as it sounds!! I've spent year after year drawing up plans, working it all out etc....Its only these past 10 months that I have seriously put some effort in and made a real difference. I am so used to it that I wonder what I will do when its all over. Its the main part of my life paying it all off. It will be very odd to be debt free. If I do get out of it in the next 2/3 years it will have taken me 22 years in total to get rid of it! Aargh!

I guess the next aim is to save! Set targets, plan on getting a certain amount in the bank in a certain amount of time. Then reward yourself with a fab holiday!

You will be fine when you go back to work! I think half the problem is not having that distraction. I always feel down when I'm off. More time to dwell on things than when you are working.

Seriously though you are doing incredibly well. You haven't that far to go now! Just ten months if you hit target! It will fly by. When you start to feel down don't think of the negative stuff, think of what you have achieved so far! You are really doing so well even if it doesn't always feel like it. It's not going to be like this forever.... you have light at the end of the tunnel now. If you hit target you will be out of debt THIS YEAR! And just in time for Christmas!

Chin up, Good luck and Happy new year xx

  • Hi Arty,
I just wanted to quiz you seeing as you are a bit further down the line than me with your plan.... I have nearly paid my o/d now and then Im gonna bust Lloyds visa (still charging me interest) But once they are gone all my other debts have suspended or drastically lowered interest. (Yorkshire bank, mbna & 2 Barclaycards)
I wanted to ask, when you have paid extra off your debts, have your creditors increased the interest? I remember reading you were worried about it happening and I remember reading you pay more off but haven't noticed if your interest increased. And secondly, now your debts are getting lower have you had any full and final settlement offers from them? I'm trying to work out for the future if I should take a gamble and pay any money I free up after a debt is cleared, off them all equally and risk the interest increasing or save it and hope to save some money with a settlement (if I can get one that is).
    Cheers!
