I have a quote for tiling, labour only, S London area, £180 a day - is this reasonable? Tiler comes recommended

The trouble with getting charged 'per day' for anything is they could pan-it-out.
I think i'd ask how much to do the job and then if you get other quotes it's easier to compare them.

for most domestic jobs, get a quote for the whole job.
if you dont know what you are doing, paying a day rate is wide open to abuse.

most tilers will base their quote on a cost per sq m.
    Get some gorm.

£180 per day is a reasonable rate. However, try and get a quote for the job. It should be in the region of £33 per sq m for porcelain tiles inc. adhesive/grout etc. and a bit less for ceramic.

If the tiler is recommended, then you are part of the way there.

If you actually see his work and like it, that's even better. There is a huge difference between good tiling and poor tiling.

As for £180 a day; well that's pretty decent for London, but I would get a "whole of job" price, as you are encouraging him to "go slow" on a day rate!

    Good luck.:)

  • Thanks - it is a two day job that works out at £180 per day

Well if you are happy with the quality of his work and you feel comfortable with the price, then good luck.
As I said before, £180 a day is pretty reasonable for a decent tradesman in your area.

Please let us know how you get on.:D

  • Day rate means nothing if you don’t know how many meter’s there laying in a day…

What is the obsession with M2 rate when it comes to tiling?

Many moons ago I was a tiling contractor, we did commercial and domestic work. Commercial was always worked on a m2 rate, simply because there was vast amounts of it and it became as sensible way to price and bill.

When it came to domestic tiling, everything was priced on an estimate of how long a job would take.

    Example.

With an early start and rapid setting materials a good tiler will complete an 18m2 conservatory floor in a single day.

Alternatively a 2.5m2 bathroom floor that requires the floorboards repairing, a ply laid, the toilet and sink removed, floor tiled, threshold fitted, carpet cut and fitted to threshold, door removed, cut and rehung, toilet and sink replumbed Isn't going to take one day.

Would you expect someone to charge £33m2 for either of these jobs?

For domestic work, get a price for the job, it then doesn't matter if it takes a day or a week, you have a fixed price and know where you are.

Incidentally, when working out these prices I used to work on a basis of £200 per day, that was 15 years ago. So it doesn't look like prices have changed that much.

    .
It is industry standard for alot of trades e'g architects, house builders, designer etc nearly all the time estimates for them are based on the m2 as there projects are often not built for you to see you can’t give a realistic indication of price buy giving a day rate even a fixed price you'd be basing that on M2…?

Even a single home owner looking to divide a room add a bathroom etc they want to know if there budget is sufficient prior to starting by getting prices from all trades first?,

If they agree your m2 price you can always visit to give a fixed price later if you wish, yes you do need different m2 prices empty room, bare floors, concrete etc it may take some less experienced people a while to work these out but once you have it enables you to price works very quickly and price bigger jobs.. Bonus it cuts down time wasted visiting sites when there is insufficient budget to start
