DVLA public consultation on selling your data

Apologies if someone else has already started a thread.
As we all know the DVLA is scrupulously careful with our personal data. Information which the public are required to provide to a public body by law.
The DVLA wants to extend the range and circumstances in which it will provide your data electronically.
They say they would like to hear our views (although not much publicity about this part). Here is the link. They are quite open in their consultation document that this is cost and income driven.

While the paper can be read as seeking views, having been involved with such things, I really think this is just a necessary public-face step and it could be shortened to, "We have selected from a huge array of comments what we want to hear and we translate this to mean, close expensive customer to real staff interfaces, pay off more staff but to make up, pay Siemens a huge amount of money to draft systems (that largely already exist) and create more failure points that the government can then pay us twice to fix".0

HUh????
Where do you think all the companies who charge for HPI checks and the like get their information from?
All the clamping companies and private car park operators who clamp cars, where do you think they get their information from.
Fact is the DVLA sell your data to any commercial company they like.
Now they want even more freedom and it looks like they have made the decision but a "consultation" will just legitimise it.0 -
I didn't see anything glaringly obvious about making more personal information available although its quite clear they're looking to cut costs etc.
What I do wish to see is a weekly or monthly tax disc. If we can't have 6 months tax for a spare car on the drive without insurance, then they should give us a shorter tax disc period instead so that spare cars can still be used with relative ease.0 -

You do realise that post was full of sarcasm don't you?0 -
Had a read of that PDF and I can't find anything about changing what information they find to third parties, just stuff about replacing more paper based forms with online versions, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if done right.
Can you point out which bit I'm missing?0 -
its already a done deal as anyone in the trade can tell you
remember your local dvla will be shut before christmas because online is seen as the way forward
heck i cant even see what planning applications there are now in my local rag i have to log in to the district council website and trawl through heaps of rubbish all in the name of doing people out of jobs
this document has been out a fair while now too0 -

That doesn't invalidate my opinion.0 -
Two things ring alarm bells.
1.The paper discusses "removing obstacles to online transactions" and "drawn on public and private sector to make transactions easier..." and "increase the range of transactions online" with a strong emphsis on the word "commercial" throughout the document.
"90% of commercial customers expect to transact with DVLA via the internet". Yes the bailiffs and parking companies. I cannot think of any large commercial customers apart from this group who could amount to such a high number of transactions.
2. The consultation questions, as pointed out by another poster above, do not give an opportunity to voice concerns about data access.
That's my thoughts0 -
Its OK making these things available to anyone with a crisp £5 note or less.
But i think they should notify us when information was requested, Who asked for the data and why.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
