Washing Machine 1 Month out of Guarantee and Broke!

So we have a 13 month old Beko machine. And typically it's broke, on a Sunday!
Called Beko and they said it's oit of guarantee so we can pay £170 for an extended warranty and they'll fix it (jokers).
Now I know 12 months is an arbitrary figure that most shops use and it doesn't override my statutory rights, but what is the best way of getting Comet to resolve this?

Well if you want Comet to offer you a remedy then you need to speak to them, not the maufacturer. What will likely happen is they'll offer to look at it, for a fee, and if it's determined to have an inherent fault they'll repair or replace. The initial fee of course should be refunded.0

Should have bought a Miele. Almost £1000 but with a 10 year guarantee and you generally get 20+ years life out of their machines. I've had so many "cheap" washing machines and learned my lesson. You get what you pay for.0

Being smug and righteous isn't particularly helpful. How, exactly, does this answer the OP's question?
To the OP, neilmcl is about right.
First thing contact Comet, be nice, try to appeal to the human side of whoever you speak to, and see if they will good-will repair it for you.
If they refuse then your only option will be to pursue them under SOGA. You'll need to get an independent engineer's report (at your expense) to prove that the fault was an inherent manufacturing or design fault (most likely it is). With that in hand re-approach Comet or the manufacturer and insist on a repair under SOGA. They should also refund the cost of the engineer report, but I'm not certain on that.
The tricky thing here is finding someone qualified and willing to do the report.0 -
BlueC, when the consumer has an independent report showing that the fault is inherent, then it is only the retailer, not the manufacturer, who has to provide a remedy under SoGA.
Also, not sure how you can say the fault with the OP's machine is likely to be an inherent manufacturing or design fault.0
