sash window damaged

so rope of one of the windows snapped today :(

2.5m sash window in conservation area,

not sure where to go to repair - or how much it will be

I emailed ventrolla just a google search - they came up

I am based in Glasgow

any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Also is this something urgent that needs to be repaired now or can it wait?

Is it worth doing up all windows to save on energy bills - how much do these things cost?

Your local handyman will be able to do that for a few quid; if you can't find a handyman, look for a local carpenter or builder. It won't take long to do.

I presume it is an old timber sash?

Easy job if you are DIY-minded, otherwise get a handyman in to do it.

Replace BOTH sash cords at the same time though.

    Re. Using Ventrolla

They did my sash windows in my previous flat in 1997. I had 4 or 5 wood sash windows then. It then cost me about 2.5-3K. This did not include painting the outside of the new windows which i did myself to save a bit. It was definitely worthwhile. They looked so much better and probably saved me money on energy bills.
  • Thanks for all replies - I have some money coming in hopefully next month which would be I could afford to fix up windows with Ventrolla

Can the rope wait as long as I keep the screw lock tightened or should get fixed now with carpenter and get windows done up with Ventrolla

I have 3 windows to get fixed so maybe £1500-£2000 to get fixed

unless they do a payment plan?

saw some people recommend Woodwise in Glasgow any experience here with the company?

I had a damaged rope for quite a while before i found the money to get new windows.
  • Ive been involved in selling sash window parts for timber and upvc sash windows all my working life and it amazes me what people will pay for what is a very simple job for someone with basic DIY skills. I actually still sell sash window parts online (famous auction site) and they are not expensive, any local DIY man with basic tools can fix them. A 20metre roll of rope is about £15, then you will just have to pay the guy to fix it. All for less than £3000...!!!!
  • I repaired a snapped/perished rope through in Edinburgh when I had a tenement flat there.
Very simple job, luckily it was the right hand side that snapped(looking out), I rested the window on the hinges that allow you to swing it in to clean. I then unscrewed the fixings to the side and accessed the counter weight, fixed the replacement rope and ran it over the pulley to the window.
I'm not scared of a 'little' bit DIY but would have to say that as long as the wood has not been painted over with years worth of gloss and the weight box is accessible then most folk would be capable at this job!

DIY and me do not mix - I would somehow set fire to the windows:wink:

tedster123, I think Ventrolla specialise in full replacement/refurbishment... they're not going to be very keen on doing a repair job worth £50 for you.

Just to clarify- this should be a repair of the 2x cords- no need to replace the windows. And if you did spend £3000 on new windows, you'd *never* make the money back in lower heating bills- totally pointless.
