New 2nd hand car MoT question

I'm going to look at a used car tomorrow and hopefully buy it, but I'm a little confused on the way the guy is explaining it.

The MoT expires in April 2012 but he's saying it'll be sold with 12-months MoT but this isn't possible untill at least mid March.

Can a private trader MoT a car more than 30 days before its due to expire?

You can MOT a car at any point in time, and the 12 months will run from that date.

If however you wait until a set period before the expiry of the MOT (I think it is a month), you can then have the car MOTed and the MOT will run for 12 months from the ORIGINAL expiry date.

eg if it is due to expire on April 1st. If you do it tomorrow, it'll expire on 12th Feb 2013, but if you wait until 15th March, it will expire on 1st April 2013.

Not sure I've explained it very well, but hopefully it makes enough sense.
  • Ah thats makes sence, I didn't know you could MoT a car at any point and have it run from then I thought you had to wait untill the current one expired.
