Development descriptions, and what they really mean...

"A select development of just 240 contemporary 2 bedroom lifestyle apartments"

Block of flats.
"An exicting urban development of 3 and 4 bedroom character townhouses"

We couldn't get planning permission for an exclusive development of contemporary lifestyle apartments but you're not going to believe how many terraced houses our architect has managed to cram into the same space!
"An exciting mixed use development of assisted purchase affordable housing, 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, 4 bedroom townhouses and 5 bedroom detached properties."

Social experiment.

"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."
  • When I worked in Town Planning, an application came in for 56 flats.

There were so many neighbour objections that the developer withdrew the application.

He submitted it again a week later with the description as '56 spacious luxury apartments', got very few objections and in due course the development was granted planning permission.

A rose by any other name....?

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

There was one in the local paper on Friday. It said the development was "a five minute walk from the town centre". Well, maybe if you're the Olympic speed-walking gold medal winner, but it would take me at least 20 minutes from there!
