Hi

My wife has a nearly 4 year old peugeot 307 cc. She's havering about keeping it for a bir longer. Currently it has extended warranty which she can extend again but is thinking about servicing and MOT as it's 4 year old and due.

The crux is that her local Peugeot dealer is offering interim service and MOT for £139.

Looking at the flier it says it's

The service includes oil and filter changes; safety, environmental and functional checks; fluid top-ups; and road test.

Strikes me it's a lot of money for an oil and filter change.

Anyone got any comments different?

    You summed it up perfectly.
They change the oil and possibly the air filter then they poke about the car to see what they can sell you and probably say "only a few miles left in the pads/discs/fan belt/windscreen wipers etc. Best to get it changed now!"

Its about the going rate for a main dealer interim service.
An oil & filter change can be got cheaper, but this isn't just an oil & filter change.

If you want to save money, look at getting it serviced at a local non-franchised garage. :)

you would be mad not to go to the dealer with this car to save £50 as they will always update your electronics to sort out any inherent bugs and you wont even know this

Don't forget, that for every £100 your dealer charges you for work, he has to add on an extra £20 (VAT) to pay the fraudulent tax.

My local garage is only £2 cheaper than the main dealer however it changes stuff that doesn't need changing (fuel and air filter) and doesn't change stuff that does (pollen filter). It also doesn't apply ECU updates, doesn't stamp the body check thus invalidating the 10 year anti-corrosion warranty, and the dealer gives free AA breakdown and home start cover with every service.

I would suggest you find a different local independent garage that doesn't rip you off, especially with work not required but does not do what the manufacturer stipulates. ;)

However, I think only authorised dealers will have any software updates. Lets hope none are needed as a dealer will usually charge another £50+ plus VAT to update unless in warranty. If in warranty a dealer should check & update if necessary for free :)

Paint inspection for warranty purposes should also be free of charge.

£139 for an Mot and service.

So, knock off the £50 for the not, that's £90 for a dealer service.
Not too bad when Nationwide will charge £45 for just an oil and filter change.

So £45 to keep the warranties, the stamp in the book, and the goodwill if you need it, and a check on the rest of the car while they're under the bonnet, and a pre mot road test.

I know the place well - been using them for over a decade with previous cars and for my MOT. I personally know some of the people who work in it. They aren't ripping me off. They do a standard service and the price is £2 more than the dealerships specific one but with the issues I highlighted.

With Ford, any updates are done whilst the car is connected to the diagnostic whether its in warranty or not for free.
