AMEX application question

I was in the process of applying for the AMEX Blue card (via Greasy Palm), but during the application I was asked for a contact name at my workplace. Do American Express contact this person in order to verify I am who I say I am? I haven't got anything to hide, but I just found this a bit odd.
Does anyone know the answer to my above question?
Thanks.

I have been with Amex since 98 and I remember putting my managers name in that box. Instead of ringing my manager they called me at work and confirmed I was working there. I doubt they will speak to your contact name unless they come across something in your application that they are not sure about.0 -

I had the information to hand from my recent mortgage application details. In general you will have to inform the person in personnel/Human sources that you have given your permission for a certain organisation to enquire about your salary. Without your permission they should not give away personal details to Amex.

Thanks for your replies guys. Much appreciated.
I guess I'll ask one of my colleagues if he minds acting as a contact, just in case Amex do follow it up.
dark_star - I feel sorry for the poster who was put on the National Fraud database
, just because the CC company got the contact address wrong.
A couple of other questions. I read that I can manage my Amex credit card account online. Is the online service any good? How long does it take purchases to appear on the online statement?
Thanks again.Please call me 'Kazza'.0 -

Yep they do. I waited forever for an Amex card and when I queried it they said they were waiting for my employer's reference. Don't know where they sent it to, 'cos I never gave them my employer's HR address. I think they just assumed it was the same address I work at, and it ain't.0
