I have a very old Mrs Beeton cookbook, I'm going to look it up to find some recipes like this to see how I get on. This was a very interesting thread!0

nothing nicer than a good lancashire hot pot in a huge dish if friends are coming round for something to eat
then for afters a nice bread and butter pudd
dirt cheap and wholesome and very very nice
we only had a pud on sundays and the rest of the week after tea
we had jam and bread lovely with a cuppa
cheaper as well, ;D ;D ;D0 -

now, youd think it would be fatteing wouldnt you ??
but
if you eat a bowl of porridge for breakky
your not hungry till lunch time
then eat a nice bowl of soup with some crusty bread
your not hungry till tea time
then eat hot pot and veggies and then bread and butter pud
your not hungry till breakfast time next day
so you dont pick pick pick all day and night and eat the extra cals
and you save a bomb on crisps and kit kats and snacks and all that junk.
my gran used to make a cake and every afternoon shed open the tin wed have a cuppa and a slice of cake or a scone and it was heavenly
coming in from school on my way home the place would be spotless, the fire glowing red and I could smell the tea cooking
and wed sit and have our cake and tea and shed ask me what had gone on that day, id do the odd errand for her then go home to my mum,
*sigh0 -
sigh, sigh ;D ;D ;D
takes me back that does0 -

Ive never really thought about it, is crusty bread more filling than normal bread?0 -
Although you can buy bread cheaper than you can make it, the homemade stuff is generally a lot more filling and you know it's not pumped full off preservatives etc. ;D
If you can't make it (for whatever reason) then I'd recommend buying something better than the white 'fluff'. I think good bread can make a meal stretch twice as far!0 -
As a disabled widow living on a fixed income I read with interest all the comments.I have been like a lot of folk, drop into the supermarket and just shop without thinking. Now I have no choice but to go back to the shopping that I used to do 40 odd years ago.I can't say that I miss the crisps and sweet chocolate bars a great deal, but on a Saturday night I have my one treat of the week and it's a bag of liquorice allsorts. My two grown up daughters love the fact that Mum's gone back to making rock-cakes and scones. Once a week I take a trifle to my youngest daughters and my grandaughter says to her 3 brothers "Here comes Nanny with her olden-days Puds" They all really enjoy my new way of life.So give it a go,it can be very theraputic
