Acer Laptop

I've just bought myself a new Acer laptop, as my previous Dell has gone on the blink and I can't do without one while the Dell is repaired. I already don't like the operation of the touchpad, which feels 'sticky' (I could race around the screen on my Dell), the cursor doesn't move smoothly and it's having to be pumped to move it (I could flash it round the screen with my Dell) and something new - a tiny letter-box shaped thing with black arrows at each end that appears at the tip of my cursor and won't shift - what on earth's that for?
The keyboard seemed OK to start with but now I've started typing, I'm missing letters (not enough effort on the keys I assume) - missed about 20 in this effort so far! So I'm far from happy with my new purchase.
I've bought myself a cordless keyboard to try to get over the keyboard problem, but isn't that crazy!
Any other experiences, anybody?

Dont forget to click THANKS if I help you!!:j :j0 -
mine works fine
right click the icon for the touchpad in the task bar and click properties then change the settings to suit your needs0 -
we bought an Acer laptop last year and had nothing but trouble. it was sent back for repair and we were told that if it took over 1 month to repair we could have our money back. they sent it back to us 1 day before the end of the month. but the repair had not been fixed. we sent it back and again they retutned it to us the day before they would have to refund.
we complained to the company but they literally just laughed.
the following day my husband decided to make a stand.
He went to the retailer (who i shall not name, but it began with a "c") and kicked up such a fuss by telling every customer interested in Acer laptops about their policy and told the store he would not stop and they would have to have him arrested first, thus allowing us to get press coverage. so,as expected, they called the police. He was held for about an hour then released with no charge.
the retailer telephoned the following day and refunded our money.

Thanks for trying to help - I'm just so clueless about techie matters. There is no icon for the touch pad. I can't find any link to it except for something called Synaptic but I have no idea what to enable and what to disable. You have to be a mind reader to know what the terms mean!
The cursor is out of control as it keeps leaping to the left and right where I don't want it to go and this blasted letter box is everywhere and stopping me operating smoothly!
Very brassed off!

I'm used to mine now but it is a bit strange at first - getting used to the touchpad.
I've just had a look at the synap thingy and if you double click it and then select the tab for pointer options you can change the speed to make it a bit faster
And you think its bad missing keys - I have long nails and everytime I type a 'K' I nearly unpick the 'O'
:rotfl:
Its not a bad pooter when you get used to it thoughThe early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese :cool:0 -
Have you had a word with the store you bought it from? They might be able to help you.
They could also let you know if this is common, or if your keyboard/mouse pad might be faulty. You could then have a refund if you bought it less than a month ago.Lightbulb Moment: Feb 2007

Thanks each and every! I've partially sorted it, much heavier individual hits on the keys, slowing down my typing speed, keeping my left fingers away from the touch-pad (its sensitivity is high) and trying to keep my cool!
Typed a long letter this morning with layout important. This time I encountered this peculiar business where, if you try to insert one letter, it cancels the next one and so on. The only way out is to cancel all you have typed after the omission and do it again - that was my solution anyway. I know there will be a better way!
I'm a fairly patient person but I went to bed depressed last night! Feel better this morning! I'm hitting the keys so hard, that it's making the keyboard bounce but I'm missing less letters! I need a rest now to recover from the physical effort - and I'm very glad I'm not writing a novel!

You have probably switched it into "overtype" mode by accidentally hitting the INSERT key. This toggle between "insert" mode, where characters are inserted at the cursor and everything else shuffles up, and "overtype", where a typed character replaces the one at the cursor.schiff wrote:This time I encountered this peculiar business where, if you try to insert one letter, it cancels the next one and so on.
If it happens again, just hit the INSERT key a second time and everything should be back to normal.
Applications usually have some indication when you are in "overtype", for example WORD displays "OVR" on the status line at the bottom.
Good luck with the Acer anyway. I'm sure you will get used to it. I had one for about 4 years and never really had any problems with it.0 -

Thanks zenmaster. I have noticed OVR on the status line before but never knew what it implied. When I have the problem I'm currently having again, I'll know what to do! So thanks. The Ins and Del keys are tiny and next door to each other - so it can easily happen.
I've done some work on MS Works spreadsheets today - something I use a lot. It keeps leaping what seems like 500 columns to the right , when I don't think I'm doing anything to cause it. The things I can't control all seem to be involved with that blasted letter-box thing (I'd love to disable it!) plus cut/copy/paste (which again I use a lot).
I do appreciate any suggestions but I'm not very clever with computers, so can't always follow things through.

that's the icon
Leaping columns suggests you are using virtual horizontal scrolling (using the very bottom of the touchpad and dragging left or right) - you can turn that off in the preferences0
