Insurance claim - oh dear what have I done.
On leaving work one cold, dark night I hit the metal gate at the entrance to the drive and somehow managed to tangle myself in it. I got an estimate for repair and as it was in excess of £900 decided to make a claim on my insurance. As soon as I put the phone down I thought I had probably made a mistake. I have a protected no claims bonus but looking at this site my premiums will go up because I have made a claim and even if I cancel the claim it will be logged and my premiums would go up anyway.
Is this definitely true? Would I be better off now proceeding with the claim or cancelling it and paying for the damage myself?
I felt a twerp for hitting the gate and now a feel a bigger twerp for making an insurance claim.

Well you private estimate (£900) means the cost to repair by insurance will be nearer to £2500-£3000, then the hire car costs on top bring it to near £3500, so if your car isn't worth more than £4000 it'll probably be written off and the hire car cost will potentially be even higher.
Yes it's a great big scam, the whole industry is as bent as a nine bob note!!!!!
Your premiums will indeed go up even if you cancel the claim (it's now been recorded)
The amount will be between £50-£100 a year for 5 years.
It's not what you want to hear, but unfortunately it's just something we all have to bend over and take, until somebody takes insurance industry by the throat....“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

So I'd be better off now going ahead with the claim so at least I will have something from it?0
