SORN, insurance and NCB

Hi folks, I have a question (also a newbie).

I cannot afford to run my car once the insurance, tax and MOT all run out in the next couple of months, so I have decided to SORN it as I have off-road parking, which is on private land behind closed gates at the bottom of my garden, well away from the main road. I also have a steering lock as extra security, and as it's a fourteen-year-old Civic and will be out of sight, I'm not too worried about theft or damage.

My questions are;

If I officially SORN the car, will I still need basic insurance for theft and vandalism? There were noises being made a year or two ago, from my foggy memory, about all cars, regardless of roadworthy status, being required to have basic insurance (I remembered this because friends have classic cars for which they have donor vehicles).

Will I retain my five years' NCB should I wish to re-insure the car to get it back on the road? (I'm aware that it will need an MOT first, of course.)

If anyone could answer these, I'd be thankful. :)

    You don't need insurance if you sorn it.
    You will need to take out insurance in two years to keep your ncd intact, otherwise you'll lose it after two years.

    If you re-insure it, you can drive to a pre booked mot, without a current mot, and while the car is still sorned.

    Thankyou, that's very helpful. :) I'm hoping that I won't be unemployed for two years (but you never know!), so with luck, I'll be able to re-insure before two years goes by. Will keep a careful note of he dates, just to be sure.
