Combining Journeys on Oyster

Hi,

I have just moved to London and haven't quite got the hang of Oyster yet. I need something clarified.

I was under the impression that if you combined travel on rail and tube, you would get charged for one journey from start to finish.

However, the other day I went from Croydon to Victoria via national rail, and then changed to the Tube at Victoria for South Kensington. I noticed my balance had gone down a lot more than I expected, so I checked my journey history online. It's charged me for two separate journeys, a zone 5 - zone 1 and a zone 1 - zone 1.

Is that right? Seems excessive.

How long did you spend at Victoria between touching out from NR and touching in for the tube?
You are are only allowed twenty minutes, otherwise it decides it is two journeys.

Thanks for that useful website. It was busy but it didn't take us 20 mins. So does that mean my first assumption is correct, it should be 1 journey?

Also, how long does the online system take to update journey details? It still isn't showing our return journey. Thought it might be a bit more... instant.

It should get charged as one journey - but may show as 2 legs.

Remember that journeys from National Rail onto TfL are quite a bit more expensive than purely TfL journeys. East Croydon to South Ken is £5.90 or £4.10 off peak. An all tube journey is £4.40/£2.90 for zones 1-5

And the whole day should cap at the travelcard price

Can you sign in to your account on the TfL website, check your journey history and let us know what it says?

You may be misunderstanding your journey history.

You don't say whether you travelled peak or off-peak, so I'll demonstrate with a peak fare. What happens on Oyster is that when you touched out at Victoria you will have been charged the Z1-5 National Rail fare which is £4.50. You then took the tube. The Z1-5 fare for National Rail and Tube journeys is £5.90 and so a further £1.40 will be deducted from your Oyster card on touching out from the Tube. (For reference the corresponding off-peak fares are £2.80 for National Rail only and £4.10 for NR & tube).

If money is more important to you than time, you might want to consider taking London Overground to Canada Water and changing onto the Jubilee Line as,providing you touch the pink oyster reader at Canada Water, you will only be charged the tube fare for that journey .


The online journey planner will take up to 48 hours to update as journey history is held at stations and only uploaded overnight. I have had journeys that have never appeared on the online journey history.

And if you feel you have paid more than you thought you should the TFL call centre are pretty reasonable and human too. refreshing, they will check it and let you know if you need a refund.
