Advice Needed.....Years No Claims...

Both myself and the OH had cars. Last year my OH got rid of his car, we couldnt afford it. So we both ran around in mine. Last week, someone crashed into my car and its been written off. We are just awaiting word of how much we are getting. My question is this: He had 3 years no claims, and i have 2 years. I do not want to get 2 cars again, for the time being as we would struggle financially. He says he needs to earn his no claims again. So in essence...if i allow him to get a car and i go without, can he carry on with his no claims from 3 years or does it reset to zero? And also would mine continue when i insure myself as a main driver in a years time etc or do i start from scratch?

In other words, can i pause between earning no claims?

You can usually pause up to 2 years.

You can keep both going indefinitely by alternating policyholders each year. ie your husband does year 1, you do year 2, he does 3 etc.

I let my NCD slip by not having a car for over 2 years, but when I started my current policy they gave me 2 years NCD "free" on the basis that I did have NCD previously. I guess that's just at the discretion of the individual insurer so cannot be relied upon.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

We used to insure alternate years when we had only had one car.
  • Ditto Luci and Quentin. We have kept both of our NCD's going for about 8 years now by alternating, without any problems.

When I bought a car after years of not having one (company cars), my wife's insurer (Aviva) gave me maximum no claims as long as I stayed with them for two years. And they didn't try to rip me off with the renewal in the second year either.
