N Power Gas Bill - First rate seems very high

Hi all,

Just wanted some advice for our gas bill that just came through. It says they are charging us at:

first 2249kwh at 8.206p
next 880 at 2.971p

This seems very high as although we are on standard tariff, we were also on that with previous suppliers (Southern) and they were charging us 2.880 and 3.150p. I know prices have gone up but this seems nuts!

Does anyone have any advice?

It doesn't look like you use much gas so most of your units will be at the primary rate. Npower charges the higher rate on 4572 units per year but charges using a method of sculpting so that the chance of you paying the higher rate on all units is higher in winter than in the summer when it is unlikely you would use 1/12th of the annual allowance in a summer month.

You need to compare on an annual basis so if your annual usage is around 8,000kWh then 4572kWh will be at the higher rate and 3428kWh will be at the lower rate.

You also have the option of going onto a tariff that has a standing charge. This will give the effect of smaller winter bills and higher summer bills as the standing charge is equally distributed over the year.
