Biggest difference tends to be in the headphones rather than the players. Little reason (IMHO) for the dramatic differences in price of memory-stick players - they're quite likely to use the same components and codecs.

I got an ipod shuffle free with an Audible subscription and would like to comment that if you want to be able to navigate easily round your music you should go for something with a screen. I use mine for audio books and podcasts and it is a pain to have to always scroll through everything to get to what you want- with long audio books if you lose your place and end up back at the start it takes ages to find your way again.
My family have had lots of different types of players. The one real benefit of ipods imho is that when they break they will be replaced for the first year. Zen customer service is slow but gets there in the end; komplett have good service. Bear in mind that unless you are particularly careful it will get a few knocks and you may need the warranty.
