Toilet keeps flushing itself - help

The last few days, when you flush my toilet (either on half flush or full flush) it flushes as normal, you hear the cistern filling again, then it garlges and does a half hearted flush again... and again. Only way to stop it is to keep pressing the flush buttons til it stops... very frustrating

I had a look in the cistern and there was a build up of bloo-loo black at the bottom (them water cleansing blocks the mrs always stick in it grrr), I freed it up, looked a bit like sponge or coral, and flushed it away (Took about 6 flushes). Toilet is still flushing randomly tho, any ideas please as its driving us mad

Thanks in advance

I would guess that the cistern is filling up too high and thus self-siphoning (presuming it is a syphon type flush).
Drop the level of water via the float arm and see if that helps/stops the problem.

Had a look and couldnt see the ball/float arm assemlby liek in most toilets (I fixed my mums toilet by bending the arm slightly), as you look into the cistern the is the 2 flush buttons side by side (which are depressed by rods attached to the lid buttons), a tube beside them where the water goes down when it gargles and flushes again. The water level when re-filling fills a little too high on it, and it starts draining down this vertical open topped pipe, and that is when it gargles and reflushes :(

Yep - adjust the inlet - you'll see a cross-head adjusting plastic screw which will adjust the 'stop' level of the incoming water via a small float assembly. Drop the level of this down and it should stop overfilling.

I advise my customers not to put any form of toilet blocks into the cistern, as the contain bleech, and the rot the plastic and rubber seals.
    You might new seals.
A thankyou is payment enough .

bleach does rot the rubber seals, but most of the toilet blocks designed to be used in the cistern don't, did you read the op post above ?? the ballvalve needs adjusting as the water is going down the internal overflow nothing to do with seals !!
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Cheers all, the toilet has been fine for a month almost, and started playing up again. That plastic screw Ruski mentioned in post #4 seems to not have much effect on the fill level of the cistern, tried tightening it and loosening it with little effect, might the toilet need new internals? Are they all pretty much like for like? I got the toilet off ebay a few years ago (new), and cant remember the seller, or even model name
