buy to rent

I'm on benefits & currently claiming HB & CTB. My boyfriend is wanting to buy a house but as he works away could I go in as a tenant? He isn't bothered about claiming any HB if I was a tenant. Has anybody done this? Is it legal?

So let me get this straight. You and your boyfriend want to buy a house but don't want to pay for it so you've figured out this little plan where he gets a mortgage then moves you the benefit claimant into it, the government pays your rent and not only do you both get to live in a house for nothing, you get to own it as well.

    Nice.

  • I thought that the OP said that her boyfreind would NOT be claiming housing benefit for her. I may be wrong mis-reading this one... :)

I don't see why not though it won't be benefitting you as such, just him as it will be his property.
  • The reasons why we are thinking of doing this are I'm living in a damp house with a very leaky roof (the landlord does a bodge job until next time..) I also have a 6 year old son -living in those conditions aren't good for any of us. (I've been on the council list for 3 & half years!) My boyfriend is wanting to buy a property (FTB) as he's nearly 40 & wants to get a mortgage before he's classed as 'too old' & while he's in secure employment. I hope this clarifys a few things.
We don't intend on claiming HB.
All he's trying to do is provide a better house for me & my son to live in

If he doesnt want rent then it wont matter that you move in as long as you stop claiming HB.

you will also loose single persons council tax allowance.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

Surely you would simply be 'moving in with your boyfriend'???

Tenants pay rent - why would you need to be a tenant if you weren't planning on claiming HB?
Fog on The Tyne isn't mine all mine... but if I wanted it, I'd want it with a discount code.
  • I wouldn't be moving in with my boyfriend as he would still be working away. He would be just paying the mortgage. I would pay the other bills.

I think I headed the post wrong, but I couldn't think of a suitable title.

So, your boyfirnmd would buy a house for you to live in, but you'd pay all the bills except the mortgage.

But you'd still claim benefits as a lone parent?

Where would he stay when he's not working away and is being your boyfirend?

Sounds to me like your moving in with him (certainly into his house) and want to keep IS, CTC etc as single parent.

How would your situation differ from a couple with a child where one of them works away?
