No sound with HD channels

Hi there I was wondering whether anybody could help with this please.
I got my new Virgin Media V HD box yesterday. I installed it and connected my surround system to the HD box. When I switch on the TV, I get all the channels including all HD channels. However I can’t get any sound with the HD channels except ITV1 HD. I get good pictures but I don’t understand why I can only get sound with ITV1 HD and not the other HD channels. When I put the other HD channels I get a very intermittent/irritating noise.

It's because you have set your V HD Box to "Audio Override = ON" in the audio settings menu. This effectively tells your V HD BOX to output a Dolby Digital encoded stream when it detects a DD signal present. All HD channels apart from ITV HD output a DD stream along with the HD picture. You get no sound on your tv because the tv cannot decode the DD signal via the HDMI socket. There is obviously a dilemma here. Do you set the override on and get proper discrete 5.1 audio for your surround system and get no sound through your tv on HD channels, or do you set "Audio Override = OFF" and get all channels through your tv but only stereo/prologic through yor surround system!

We had a visit from a very nice Virgin Media Engineer who tried everything to make it work but he could not fix it. In the end, he said there could be a problem with the optic cable or my optic convertor to Video.

After he left I followed your advice and all HD channels can now be played on my surround system.
