Mantis garden tillers

Has anyone any experience of the "Mantis" tiller or can offer any comments on it?
Increasing age means my ancient 5hp Mountfield is getting too heavy for me to manage but I still want to continue growing our own fruit & veg.
(hope this is the right section of the forum for this query)

  • Hi, if you live anywhere near Fife in Scotland, I have a Brigs & Stratton rotavator which might suit you to a tea... It's just lying in the back of the shed...

Thanks very much for the offer but I'm way down in Cheshire - travel cost would probably be more than the cost of a new Mantis:)
  • Hello there we've been proud owners of a 4 stroke mantis tiller for about 5 years. Its lightweight, easy to handle and best of all you can get it into the car.Just before christmeas we got a seconhand one out f the local paper, its only a 2 stroke machine but for £25 it was a bargain. But in my opinion 4 stroke it is.
Do you know that the main distributor is over in Stockport, but if you ask nicely they do part used machine which customers have returned within the 1 year test period. we bought one of those and saved about a £100.its alawys worth asking

would it not be the case that the mantis could only dig already well dug soil though?
my 3hp briggs and stratton sometimes struggles but i find it reasonable enough to handle but it wouldnt go in the back of the car
i would say 5 hp must be a fairly big beast of a thing for just an allotment like i have so went the 3 route from the start (ebay)
  • Thanks for replies. It is the idea of using the Mantis in my heavy clay that worries me a bit. Even the 5hp struggles a bit but the Mantis only cuts a narrow path so perhaps it will cope (especially if you can trust their advertising )
