Cheap Tuna That Still Tastes Good?

I'm not a fussy eater at all but have found in the past that when I've bought cheaper canned tuna it's not had a very nice texture to it. Tuna seems to have gone up a lot in price recently! Does anyone have any recomendations for nice cheaper tuna. I prefer tuna in brine to oil.

I find the Tesco own brand nice - but not tried the value one.
Also one in Aldi that was nice.

Can I suggest that when you buy tuna you buy chunks not flakes.

Tesco Value chunks are fine, solid chunks not mush, but they shot up from 45p to 75p in my store. I tried the 3 for £1 but it was not nice, even the cats didn't like it. :rotfl: I am lucky that we have a cash and carry which sells out of date food, I got a case of 48tins of John West for £22. I dread to think how much it will cost in the shops by the time I have finshed these and need to buy some more. Sorry this doesn't help you. The only thing I suggest is to keep your eyes peeled for a small cash and carry whilst you are out.

I think tuna smells like cat food and probably tastes worse. In South of France, I've seen huge variety of tuna in sauces and even enjoyed some and I don't actually like tuna. But since going easyjet to Nice isn't that economical, here are some offers I spotted earlier..

Kingfisher tuna chunks in brine £1, Poundland https://www.poundland.co.uk

    John West tuna chunks in oil/water/brine 4 x 185g multipack 50% off to 18/02, Costcutter https://www.costcutter.co.uk

Pacific Pride tuna flakes in brine 2 cans plus 1 free, 99p, 99p Stores https://www.99pstoresltd.com

Princes tuna chunks in brine 3 pack 99p, 99p Stores

Probably because it's fairly fresh, the French wouldn't put up with anything else. I'm not a big lover of fish to be honest though when I ever have really fresh fish I can certainly tell the difference, eating it is most definitely nearly always enjoyable as well.

I remember the time one of my aunts bought fresh cod when we were over in Ireland on holiday one year and can remember how delicious it tasted. And before they privatised one the rivers over there as well one of my uncles would sometimes come home with a fresh salmon, most definitely better then anything you’ll get in the supermarkets or what you get in a tin.

I remember seeing photos of tuna on scales after a fishing contest off Le Lavandou, in the local paper there. But also, going out for a run really early, seeing a refrigerated truck from Boulogne delivering boxes of fresh fish to a restaurant by the marina !

Would 100% agree with this ... my cats won't eat the flakes which must surely say something!

I've found Al*di's tuna chunks good and tastes nice - currently 62p / tin which is subsantially cheaper than Mr T Value & Mr A SP both of which were 75p last week and IMHO not a patch on the quality of the Al*di one ......
