Aldi Fruit Trees £3:99 in store now

Options
Just a Heads-up. The fruit trees were in most stores yesterday, despite not being in the catalogue yet. They are normally released in a couple of weeks time. My guess is, wherever they were stored is under snow, so they are shipping them earlier.

Normal varieties are there.. :j
Plum.. Opal, Victoria, Gage
Apple.. Bramley, Cox's
Pear.. Doyenne, Conference
Peach.. Red Haven

I'll add to the list when I remember the others I saw. They'll sell out fast as normal, but there may not be a queue at the door, as they aren't in the catalogue!

Had a look and am impressed by the height of the trees. A bit unsure about the size of the bag holding the root. Suspect there are not a lot of side roots left on the trees.

Apples include braeburn, Elstar and Golden Delicious.
    Plums include Golden Gage.

The only cherry is Morello. If you want Stella try Pounstretcher at £5.99. I suspect the trees come from the same source as trees look the same, the labels are very similar and the varieties largely the same except a smaller choice.

They had stella at my aldi ras. Like most things, i guess it depends on the store...the local aldis here never seem as good as other peoples!

I would have loved a golden gage. :(. I got a peach and a brambly apple. I don't have a pollinator for the bramley yet, but no reason it can't settle in i guess. I am not even that fond of bramley, but felt having made the trip i could not just get a peach:o
  • They had Stella at my local Aldi too. They also had packs of three fruit shrubs, mine has golden rapberry, gooseberry and red raspberry plants in it.
  • I bought a Victoria Plum tree yesterday and couldn't believe it was only £4 :T It was a toss us between that and the peach tree but didn't think that would survive outside even though I live in the sunny south .

I saw them in £stretcher and was waiting until i went to Morrisons 'cos they usually have good buys, but may try to get to Aldi now.
I like the idea of a Peach but imagine it's to cold up here.

Can anyone tell me what the heights of these are when full grown, approx of course. I really only can manage dwarf varieties/1.5 metre varieties. I already have a couple i purchased from suttons or t & m last year, they are in massive pots. I dont have e space for anything with a widespread....i tied down the bracnches opf my two fruit trees so can determine, somewhat, the spread of the two i currently have.

I'm guessing at these prices they will be 15-20ft standards not dwarf rootstock.

Just had a quick rummage through the cellar, as I had some Aldi apple trees yonks ago and thoguht I might still have some of the packaging. They say "height is dependant on variety and pruning from 5 to 25ft. From what I recall, the branches would start about 5ft up, so as I said I'm guessing 15 to 20 ft to get fruit off them.

I think the pots might not suffice as many are bell shaped and would become top heavy, especially after the 2 to 3 years you might need to wait for them to become productive. Also you generally need reasonably deep soil for fruit trees. Maybe one of the larger half whisky barrels might work.

Wilkos sometimes have ballerina and balcony fruit trees that might be more suitable.
  • The plum tree I bought was nearly as tall as me and I'm only 5' so I'm guessing it's going to get bigger than that once it starts growing. Might need a rethink on where I plant it.
