Pretend discounts!

A satellite guy came to fit a new digibox for a neighbour.
On his van were emblazoned the words 'discount for over 6os'.
When I asked him about it he said he could fit one while he was here and he quoted the price he charged my (young) neighbour. When I asked about my discount he huffed and he puffed and said it was already good value (which on checking, it wasn't).
So while there are legit schemes like B&Q, I wonder how many discounts are fabricated - maybe by hiking the price then discounting.

I always ignore discounts and look at the price I am actually being asked to pay. Discounts are manipulative, depending on the originally advertised full price.
You also have to make completely sure that you are comparing like with like.
Incidentally, I don't think that B&Q's discount prices are particularly competitive. I still use them a lot though, because they are the only big DIY store near me and the fact that they have such a varied stock under one roof makes them very convenient. I don't go there expecting to get the cheapest prices, though - even with my discount card.0 -
