need to release 10k

In a couple of weeks I might need to find 10k. We both have investment portfolios but this needs to come from mine due to charges. Briefly I have about 20k in National Grid shares, 43k in various funds split between 7 funds and 20k in cash isas. My head tells me to cash some ng shares but when I think about the dividends [approx £900 a year] I lean towards the cash isas [all between 3and 4%]. What would people do in my position.

Are the NG shares in an Isa? If not, why not sell 10k worth of these shares. Then transfer half of your cash isa money into a S&S Isa and buy NG shares within the S&S Isa.

That makes good sense, the shares are not held in an isa they were bought through share save schemes when I worked for the company. I had not put them in an Isa before because I did not think these would incur CGTax. I think you have a good point as to transfer some of the cash isas into s&s isas, not much return on cash isas.

Its probably unwise to have nearly 25% of your investments in the shares of a single company, especially a former employer which is probably responsible for your pension too. Consider what could happen if NG falls on hard times. Reduce exposure. Sell NG.
