I had to claim for water damage and now I've had a separate accident and ruined a carpet. I don't know whether to claim for it or not.
I'll never be a Money Saving Expert while my kids are Mony Spending Experts.

Escape of water should be covered but the cause of the escaped water normally isnt. The issue can be if it is the progressive action and not a one off occurance which may not be covered.
If they say cleaning is excluded from the policy ask them for the page and paragraph reference in the policy book, if they cant provide it then it aint there and so the "exclusion" doesnt apply. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

            Hi
We deal with nu claims in the call centre I work in.
I've been on hols with kids this week, but will bring home my policy booklet tomorrow. And will take a look. Im sure there is an exclusion for cleaning though...
As for the ceiling damage. It will be classed as escape of water damage, therefore you could claim. However you cannot claim for the pump that caused the leak, only for the damage that the escaping water caused.

If this is a Norwich Union Direct policy then the cleaning clause is on page 9, 12 and 13 of the policy booklet - you can read a copy online here
 http://www.norwichunion.com/library/pdfs/home-insurance-policy-wording.pdf
This is going by the page number, not the PDF page number by the way. When you load it just do Ctrl+f and then type "clean" to find all instances of the clause. It appears to be in every section, buildings, contents and personal possessions.
EDIT - just had a look at a More Than (Royal and SunAlliance) policy wording and it contains the same exclusions. Link here - http://www.morethan.com/process/documents/home_policy_wording.pdf
Edit again - just had a look at the Hiscox policy wording - same exclusion. Hiscox are noted for quite a wide ranging cover so this exclusion appears to apply across the board. Funny thing is, I do not recall seeing it in any documents in the late 80's / early 90's.0
